The De Kalb Correspondence

The transcribed letters in this collection are all from the Judge William Cooper Papers, which are held by the Stevens-German Library at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.

Judge William Cooper organized the purchase and settlement of the Town of De Kalb in February, 1803. He headed a group of proprietors who purchased the town and originally held a majority interest the town. The portrait is Judge William Cooper, painted by Gilbert Stuart, from Cooper's Wikipedia article.

The transcribed letters presented here are all written from De Kalb or to De Kalb or among the proprietors about the business of the town. The dates range from 1803 to 1818. For purposes of organization the letters have been organized into categories by the name of the Cooper family members they were written to or by.
